Using Neurobehavioral Developmental Strategies to Address Core Problems in Substance Use Disordered (SUD) Adolescents |
Sigurd Zielke, D.Min., LCSW, LMHC |
| |
Substance use disordered adolescents consistently present three core recurring problems that frustrate treatment, recovery support, and school success: (1) the propensity to relate to adults and peers through power-control-based conflicted interaction; (2) the inability to gain insight and take action in regard to recurring problem behavior and relapse; and, (3) poor performance in personal planning, organization, and goal-correction. Recent findings from neurobehavioral, intervention, and developmental research are synthesized into neurobehavioral developmental intervention strategies. A distinct strategy will be presented for each core problem. Dr. Zielke is a clinical specialist at Fairbanks and Hope Academy, the recovery high school at Fairbanks. |
